Perched high on the Markagunt Plateau, Cedar Breaks National Monument offers a striking geological amphitheater located just above Cedar City, Utah. Situated at elevations over 10,000 feet, this natural amphitheater is a geological marvel formed by millions of years of erosion. The landscape features a three-mile-wide cirque that plunges 2,000 feet deep, characterized by vibrant red, orange, and purple hues caused by iron and manganese oxides in the rock. These colors are created by the interaction of rain, ice, wind, and the unique mineral composition of the limestone, shale, and sandstone layers.
Visitors are drawn to the dramatic "Circle of Painted Cliffs," where intricate stone spires, columns, and arches rise from the canyon floor. The area is designated as a Dark Sky Park, offering stunning views of the night sky alongside the daytime geological wonders. Hikers can explore the rugged terrain, with options ranging from gentle strolls to strenuous backcountry trails like the route to Rattlesnake Creek. For those seeking a closer connection to the landscape, camping is available at the Point Supreme campground, a high-elevation summer campground. This high-altitude environment, once inhabited by the Southern Paiute people, continues to attract visitors with its unique blend of natural beauty and serene atmosphere, distinct from the more crowded landmarks of the region.
