Delicate Arch, located in Arches National Park near Moab, Utah, is a globally recognized natural landmark. This freestanding sandstone arch, composed of red Entrada sandstone, measures approximately 32 feet wide and 46 feet high. The name reflects its delicate, chiseled appearance, a description first applied in 1934.
Visitors can view the arch from two main vantage points. The lower viewpoint offers a level, 100-yard walk, providing a distant but clear perspective. The upper viewpoint requires a short 0.5-mile walk with some stairs, offering a closer look at the formation. For a more immersive experience, hikers can take the 3-mile roundtrip trail. This route involves a 480-foot elevation gain and traverses slickrock terrain, requiring moderate physical fitness. The trail is exposed to the sun, so visitors should bring ample water, snacks, and sun protection.
Along the way, hikers may encounter petroglyphs, which should not be touched. The trail is rated as moderate, though the steep sections and heat can make it more challenging than it appears. The hike typically takes about two to three hours to complete. Whether viewing from a distance or hiking to the base, the arch offers a striking visual against the desert landscape, serving as an iconic symbol of the American Southwest.
