The Emerald Pools Trail offers a serene escape into the rugged landscape of Zion National Park. Located directly across from the historic Zion Lodge, this trail system provides an accessible introduction to the area’s natural beauty, making it a popular choice for visitors of all ages. The trail network is divided into three distinct sections, each offering a unique experience within the desert environment.

The lower section is the most accessible, featuring a paved, roughly one-mile round-trip path. This gentle route follows a stream through a verdant, shaded canyon, providing a refreshing break from the heat. For those seeking a bit more challenge, the middle pool adds approximately 0.8 miles to the journey, requiring a short climb over slick rock. The most ambitious option is the upper pool, which extends the hike to roughly three miles, offering a more strenuous half-day adventure through the canyon’s unique geology.

The trail’s namesake, the emerald pools, are fed by water seeping through porous Navajo sandstone. The striking emerald color of the water is caused by algae, a feature that is most vibrant during the warmer summer months. In cooler months, the water may appear brown, and the volume can fluctuate significantly, especially after monsoon storms. The trail is open year-round, though it is best visited between March and November. A valid entrance pass to Zion National Park is required for all visitors, and the trail is easily accessible via the park’s shuttle system at the Zion Lodge stop.
