Hole-in-the-Rock Road is a historic route in southern Utah, a rugged 62-mile one-way drive from near Escalante. This remote road preserves the legacy of the 1879–80 Mormon pioneer expedition, where pioneers carved a steep, narrow path through a cliff face to transport supplies and livestock to the Colorado River. The journey requires a high-clearance vehicle, as the road is rough, unpaved, and subject to drastic weather changes, including extreme heat in the summer and cold in the winter.

Visitors typically begin at the Escalante Heritage Center, which offers historical context and information about the area’s settlement history. From there, the drive to the lake is a significant adventure in itself, traversing the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. The final approach to the water is best navigated on foot or by bicycle, as the terrain becomes too rugged for standard vehicles.

The road ends above Lake Powell, the reservoir that now fills Glen Canyon, offering a serene backdrop for hiking and reflection. The trail to the lake is moderate in difficulty, taking approximately one hour to complete. Hikers should carry ample water, as the environment is arid and exposed. The area is popular for its dramatic landscapes and historical significance, attracting those interested in the history of western settlement. While the drive is challenging, the reward is a unique opportunity to explore a remote, historic landscape. Visitors are advised to check current road conditions and weather forecasts before setting out, as conditions can change rapidly. The site is open year-round, but the best time to visit is during the spring or fall when the weather is more moderate.
