Located approximately ten miles northwest of Vernal, the McConkie Ranch Petroglyphs offer visitors a rare opportunity to view some of the finest rock art in Utah. Situated on private land owned by the McConkie family, this site features dozens of intricate petroglyphs and pictographs spanning nearly a mile along south-facing sandstone cliffs bordering Dry Fork Creek. The imagery, created primarily by the Fremont people between A.D. 300 and 1300, represents the "Classic Vernal Style" and includes distinctive large human figures and shield designs. Some panels were also created by the Ute people, the indigenous inhabitants of the region.
The ranch maintains the site for public access, providing parking and basic facilities for a small fee. Visitors can explore the complex designs via two short hikes that typically take one to two hours to complete, suitable for year-round visitation. To preserve these historic artifacts, guests must stay on designated trails, keep dogs leashed, and never touch or climb the rock faces. Only still photography is permitted, and drones are prohibited. Groups of fifteen or more must request permission in advance. Visitors are expected to behave respectfully, ensuring the preservation of this significant archaeological treasure for future generations.
