Located in San Juan County, the Moki Dugway is a striking piece of engineering carved into the edge of Cedar Mesa. This steep, winding road descends from the top of the mesa to the Valley of the Gods below. The road, which serves as a critical access route for local residents and miners, features a series of sharp switchbacks that climb approximately 1,200 feet. The name "Moki" is derived from the Spanish term moqui, historically used to describe the Ancestral Puebloans who once inhabited this region, though the road itself was constructed in the mid-20th century to support mining operations, specifically connecting the Happy Jack Mine to processing facilities.

Visitors are drawn to the dramatic views of the surrounding red rock formations, including the iconic Monument Valley, which is visible in the distance. The road is graded gravel and narrow, with steep grades that require careful navigation. While passenger vehicles can traverse the route, the BLM recommends caution, particularly for larger vehicles, due to the steep 10% grade and limited passing areas. The area offers a stark, beautiful landscape typical of the high desert, with sweeping views over the Valley of the Gods. There are no admission fees, and the road is open to the public, though travelers should exercise caution and ensure their vehicles are suitable for the steep terrain. The experience is one of awe-inspiring natural beauty, combined with the thrill of navigating a challenging, historic roadway.
