Pando is a unique natural landmark in Fishlake National Forest, beside Fish Lake in central Utah, known as one of the largest and heaviest living organisms on Earth. This massive aspen grove consists of a single root system that supports thousands of individual tree trunks, creating a dense forest that appears to be many separate trees. Visitors can walk among these towering quaking aspens, observing their white bark and gentle swaying leaves in the high mountain air. The site offers a quiet, reflective atmosphere, distinct from the more rugged landscapes of nearby Capitol Reef National Park.

The grove lines Utah State Route 25 near Fish Lake, about 45 minutes’ drive from Torrey, which makes a convenient base. Visitors often combine a visit to Pando with time at Fish Lake or nearby Capitol Reef National Park, taking advantage of the area’s clear night skies.

At around 8,800 feet, the grove is pleasantly cool in summer and snowbound in winter. Lodging and dining are available at Fish Lake and in Torrey, though visitors should note that some amenities may be limited during the winter months. This location offers a serene opportunity to connect with nature, providing a peaceful retreat for those exploring the region’s unique geological and biological features.
