Albion Basin sits high in the Wasatch Mountains above Alta, Utah, offering a serene escape within Little Cottonwood Canyon. This alpine meadow is renowned for its vibrant wildflower displays, particularly lupine, paintbrush, columbine, and penstemon, which bloom beneath the rugged silhouette of Devil’s Castle. The area serves as a popular destination for families, photographers, and hikers seeking accessible mountain scenery.

Access to the basin is via Alta’s Summer Road, a graded dirt route that requires a per-vehicle amenity fee. This fee supports the maintenance of the road and facilities. Visitors should note that parking near the main trailheads is extremely limited and often fills by mid-morning, especially on weekends. During the peak bloom season from late July to early August, the area can become crowded, particularly during the Wasatch Wildflower Festival.

For those arriving later, overflow parking is available at the base lots, such as Albion or Wildcat, though this necessitates a longer walk via the Upper Albion Meadows trail. The short summer season means conditions change quickly, so planning ahead is essential. The basin provides easy access to several lakes and hiking trails, making it an ideal spot for a day trip. Whether you are capturing the colorful flora or simply enjoying the crisp mountain air, Albion Basin offers a picturesque experience in the heart of Utah’s high country.
