Nestled in the Wasatch Mountains near Sandy, Alta Ski Area offers a distinctive skiing experience just thirty miles from the Great Salt Lake. Located at the head of Little Cottonwood Canyon, this historic resort sits within a unique microclimate that delivers some of the most consistent and abundant snowfall in North America, averaging approximately 543 inches annually. Since opening its first lift on January 15, 1939, Alta has maintained its reputation as one of the oldest ski resorts in the United States, often referred to affectionately as a "skier's mountain."

The terrain spans 2,614 acres with a vertical drop of 2,538 feet, rising from a base elevation of 8,530 feet to a summit of 11,068 feet. Visitors navigate over 116 trails, which are categorized as 15% easiest, 30% more difficult, and 55% most difficult. The mountain is served by seven chairlifts, including high-speed options, along with five surface tows. A defining characteristic of Alta is its strict policy: it is one of only three ski areas in the U.S. that prohibits snowboarding, preserving a traditional skiing-only environment.

This exclusive focus on skiing contributes to a unique cultural atmosphere that has persisted for eight decades. While snowmaking is available to supplement natural conditions, the resort is primarily celebrated for its natural powder. The combination of challenging terrain, historic charm, and reliable snow conditions makes Alta a significant destination for enthusiasts seeking an authentic mountain experience in Utah.
