Located at 1765 E Main Street in Green River, Utah, the John Wesley Powell River History Museum stands as a unique cultural institution dedicated to the exploration of the Colorado River system. As the only museum in the United States solely focused on river history, it offers visitors a deep dive into the region’s geological and historical significance. The facility honors the legacy of John Wesley Powell, the one-armed boatman who led the first recorded expedition through the Grand Canyon in 1869, and celebrates the broader history of western river exploration.

Upon arrival, guests are invited to view the award-winning film "The Great Unknown," which sets the stage for the exhibits within. The museum features curated displays that include historic watercraft, sculptures of Powell’s boats, and archival photographs documenting early expeditions. Visitors can also explore sections dedicated to local paleontology and geology, including a dinosaur exhibit, before visiting the River Runners Hall of Fame. This hall recognizes pioneers and legends of the sport, highlighting the evolution of river running from flatwater journeys to white-water adventures.

The museum operates Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with last admission at 4:00 PM. Admission fees are $8 for adults, $6 for seniors aged 62 and older, and $3 for children aged 7 to 17, while entry is free for children under 7, museum members, and Green River residents. A family pass is available for $25. Beyond the exhibits, the site serves as an information center, offering resources for local travel and featuring a gift store that supports the museum’s ongoing programs. This setting provides a comprehensive look at the natural and human history of the Green River region.
