Located about 15 miles north of Moab, Utah, off US-191, the Mill Canyon Dinosaur Trail offers a unique paleontological experience along a short stretch of dirt road. The trail is divided into two distinct sections, each offering a different perspective on the region’s prehistoric past. The first stop, the Mill Canyon Dinosaur Tracksite, features a series of fossilized footprints embedded in the rock. These tracks, estimated to be over 100 million years old, provide a tangible connection to the Cretaceous period. Visitors can walk along a short, accessible path to view these ancient imprints, which include traces left by various dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures.
Further along the road, the Mill Canyon Dinosaur Trail itself is a bone trail, where visitors can observe fossilized bones embedded in the rock face. This section offers a closer look at the actual remains of dinosaurs, such as Allosaurus and Camarasaurus, providing a more intimate look at the creatures that once roamed this area. The trail is open year-round, but visitors are advised to visit during the cooler morning or evening hours, especially during the hot summer months, to ensure a comfortable experience. The trail is self-guided, with informational signs providing context about the fossils and the geological history of the area. This site offers a unique opportunity to explore the ancient past of the region in a safe and accessible manner, making it a popular destination for both locals and tourists interested in paleontology and natural history.
