The Slickrock Trail is a legendary 10.5-mile mountain biking loop located in the Sand Flats Recreation Area, just northeast of Moab, Utah. Managed by the Bureau of Land Management and Grand County, this destination offers a unique riding experience on ancient Navajo Sandstone. The trail was originally established in 1969 for Honda Trail 90s motorcycles and remains open to both motorcycles and mountain bikes, though it is strictly closed to four-wheeled vehicles.
The terrain presents a significant challenge, characterized by rolling sandstone domes and steep grades that test both technical skill and cardiovascular endurance. The surface is grippy, sandpaper-like sandstone that gives tires excellent traction but can cause severe abrasion injuries in a fall. This distinctive texture historically earned the name "slickrock" due to the lack of grip for horses’ metal shoes, a reality that persists for cyclists with cleated shoes today.
Visitors can also ride a shorter Practice Loop to hone their skills before tackling the main route. The trail intersects with the Hell’s Revenge 4X4 Trail, offering additional excitement for off-road enthusiasts. Entry to the Sand Flats Recreation Area requires a fee pass, with day, weekly and annual options. As you ride, be mindful of the slippery conditions, especially if the rock becomes wet, and ensure you are prepared for the physical demands of this iconic Moab adventure. For detailed maps and updates, consult the Sand Flats website or the Grand County Trail Mix Map before your visit.
