Located approximately 14 miles south of Blanding, Utah, the Butler Wash Ruins offer an accessible introduction to Ancestral Puebloan history. Managed by the Bureau of Land Management, this site features stabilized structures that allow visitors to safely explore ancient architecture without the need for specialized gear. The site is particularly notable for its four kivas, which provide a tangible connection to the Ancestral Puebloans (often referred to as Anasazi), who built and occupied these structures around 1200 AD.
The experience centers on a moderate, one-mile round-trip hike that is generally considered easy, taking approximately 30 to 60 minutes to complete. The trail leads to a designated overlook, offering clear views of the ruins and the surrounding Cedar Mesa landscape. This vantage point is ideal for photography, with morning to mid-day light providing the best conditions for capturing the details of the stone structures. While the site is accessible to most, including children, visitors should be aware that the trail is exposed to the elements.
Due to the extreme desert heat typical of the region, it is essential to bring your own water and appropriate clothing for sun protection. The site is free to visit, though ample parking is available near the trailhead, where a register is located for visitor check-ins. This location serves as an excellent, low-commitment stop for travelers exploring the area, offering a meaningful glimpse into the cultural heritage of the area without requiring extensive physical exertion.
