Practical information

Spring (April to May) and fall (September to October) are the best seasons for this loop. Moab, Zion and St. George are hot in summer, often above 100°F, while Bryce and Boulder Mountain stay cool and can have snow into May and from October. Summer thunderstorms bring flash-flood risk to slot canyons and The Narrows. A rental car is all you need: every stop is on paved roads except the short gravel stretches to some trailheads. The loop starts and ends in Salt Lake City and covers roughly 1,100 to 1,200 miles. Expect several 2- to 4-hour driving days, all on scenic routes such as US-6, SR-24, SR-12, US-89 and SR-9. Book lodging early in the gateway towns: Moab, Torrey, Escalante, Bryce Canyon City, Kanab, Springdale and St. George. Arches needs a timed-entry reservation for much of the year, and Angels Landing needs a permit from the lottery. An America the Beautiful annual pass costs $80 and covers the five national parks. It is cheaper than paying each park separately. State parks charge their own day-use fees. Food inside the parks is limited, so carry picnic supplies. Pack layers, sun protection, sturdy shoes, water shoes for The Narrows, and at least a gallon of water a day per person. Cell coverage is patchy between towns, so download offline maps and fuel up whenever you can.
